Thank u for this forum. I received ur e-mail through a network of friends. The issue of discrimination of women is eating our society from inside. I belong to a typical north Indian family and i am the oldest daughter with two younger sisters and a brother. I am about to get married in one years time. When my marriage was sure to take place my mum informed me that i should make sure i have sons only because life had been such a hell for her as she only gave birth to daughters and had two abortions- and finally had a boy. My mum is an educated woman and a teacher in a college. I have also been blessed with a good education. I am working in a known Indian company. Im writing all this to share how forward we can be yet hot behind we r when it comes to status of women and girls. How can this be changed??

Female infanticide: the prevalent form of sex-selective infanticide, is the systematic killing of girls at or soon after birth. It normally occurs when a society values male children to the point that producing a female is considered dishonorable, shameful, or an unacceptable investment to the individuals.

50 million girls missing from India's population

According to a recent report by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) up to 50 million girls and women are missing from India's population as a result of systematic gender discrimination in India. According to Indian government data on births, the number of females per males at birth in state of Punjab is around 775 to 1,000.
How can this immense problem be tackled? What can you do about this problem, against this problem??
